Grímsey Island is a mere 30 minutes flight away from Akureyri. On the way beyond the arctic circle to Grimsey we enjoy for the first part a beautiful fjord scenery with high and spectacular mountain range on both hands and then for the latter part the open North Atlantic Ocean view. During the flight there is a fair chance to get a glimpse of whales in the sea below us and a number of small fishing boats from villages near by.
There is less than 80 people living on the island and it is only about 5 square km / 2 square miles in size so during your visit you get a good example of a small and isolated community and yet so modern. While taking a short walk out of the small Grímsey village and walking around the island you will get to experience the varied seabird wildlife and upon season the colorful puffins in its natural habitat.
The Arctic Circle crosses the Island and you will receive your “Arctic Circle Crossing” badge certificate.
Grímsey Island is one of the last remaining true Icelandic fishing villages where almost all and everything spins around fishing and of course we offer a sample of traditional Icelandic cuisine served by local villagers.
Doe to the islands location north of Iceland the weather can change fast and to be able to operate the tour we require good condition’s.
