During the Holidays and New Year’s in the middle of the beautiful winter darkness, Icelanders turn on lights all over to bright up the day. This is the time when Iceland’s tranquility, energy and magic is all around and old traditions are more visible than any other time of the year.
You will notice all our tours have some flavour of what time of the year it is.

Icelanders start the holidays on the 24th so today, called Þorláksmessa in Icelandic, is the last day of stress. Locals are finishing wrapping the gifts and shops are opened longer than usually so in the evening people go down-town to meet and greet each other.

This evening is when Icelanders celebrate Christmas. This is the day all children have been waiting for, the beautifully decorated trees light up the living rooms and the gifts are waiting to be opened after dinner.
During the day people go around visiting family members or spend it on the couch reading a newly given book with candy by their side so very few people are out and about. This is also the day when most local service is limited or closed so here we recommend private day tours where the needed service like restaurants and Geothermal Baths are open especially for Saga Travel.

Icelanders celebrate New Year’s Eve with style and tremendous amount of fireworks. A drink or two is also on the menu.
The first day of the year most families get up late and spend the day relaxing before life goes back to the routine of everyday. This is also a day when most local service is limited or closed so here we recommend day-tours where the needed service like restaurants and Geothermal Baths are open especially for Saga Travel.
