During this Askja super jeep excursion, we visit this lunar-like terrain that was one of NASA location in Iceland where Apollo Astronauts were trained before the first lunar landing. Iconic landmarks such as Glacial River Jökulsá á Fjöllum, Herðubreiðalindir Oasis, Drekagil Gully, Víti explosion as well as Askja Caldera itself are visited as well as other off-the-map sights and places.
During the middle ages banished outlaws were sent as punishment into this harsh wilderness and today we might still be able to spot their ghosts or even trolls and other creatures that are said to live in the area and have haunted travelers for centuries.
You will get the genuine nature experience that your local tour guide will combine with knowledge of geology, biology, history, and tails of all sorts.
During the tour we hike for 2x 35-40 minutes (2.4 km one way) to Víti Explosion Crater and the difficulty level can be easy to moderate, depending on snow level and weather conditions.
We travel into approx 1000 meters over sea level so weather might be variable from the start to the end of the day. We recommend that you to bring good shoes and warm and preferably water-/windproof clothes and plenty of food for energy
And of course we offer a number of other tours that will take you to ASKJA CALDERA.
