The Lake Mývatn and Dettifoss Waterfall Tour from Akureyri is an all-in-one experience when visiting North Iceland. The Lake Mývatn area is by many considered the most beautiful place in Iceland. This has been one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations for years. An amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts and nature’s diversity. The lake area has been a filming location for major Hollywood films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Fast & Furious, and Star Wars.
Dettifoss Waterfall Tour from Akureyri is the perfect tour to fully experience the magic and power of the great Dettifoss Waterfall. We take our time to find the best sights for photographing depending on the weather and other conditions during that particular day.
The tour guides are local experts who know the area like the back of their hands and are storytellers at heart.
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri. We drive east from Akureyri, cross Eyjafjörður fjord and enjoy the view of the town, the ocean, and the mountains surrounding the fjord.
After only a half-hour drive, we arrive at the picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. From there we go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga.
Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area is the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. We enjoy the great panoramic view of the area.
After that, we arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava pillars and formations that are rich in mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, we drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and sulfur pits.
After enjoying the sights in the Myvatn Lake area we drive towards Dettifoss Waterfall, going off the main road. We arrive at Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacier river, where a mass of water, mud, and sand rumbles into Iceland’s most impressive canyon from Vatnajökull Glacier. Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, 100m wide and with a fall of 44m. There is a short walk from the parking lot to the best viewpoints of the waterfall, and adjacent waterfalls of Hafragilsfoss and Selfoss. If the ground is covered in snow (which it usually is during winter), we use snowshoes to make the hike easier.
