The tour starts from Akureyri port with a comfortable bus ride to the first attraction, Goðafoss waterfall, also known as the “Waterfall of the Gods” which is 12-meter-high and 30-meter-wide, renowned for both its breathtaking beauty and its historical significance. At the waterfall there are toilets, a souvenir shop and a café.
The next point of the tour is Skútustaðagígar Craters from where we have a perfect view of Lake Mývatn and its surroundings. From there Dimmuborgir Lava Formations is a short drive away where we can admire the area which is famed for its surreal rock formations, towering lava pillars, caves, and natural arches, which were formed by ancient volcanic activity over 2,000 years ago. This landscape is rich in Icelandic folklore; it’s said to be home to mischievous trolls and Yule Lads, Iceland’s unique Christmas characters.
Snack break time option is available at Skútustaðagígar Craters/ Dimmuborgir stop.
The tour continues from Dimmuborgir to Námafjall Hverir Mud Pots, a geothermal area known for its bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant, sulfur-streaked earth. At Hverir, you’ll experience the raw power of Iceland’s geothermal forces as the ground boils around you. The striking red and yellow tones of the landscape create a Mars-like scene, making it a photographer’s paradise. Be prepared for the strong sulfur smell, a natural reminder of the volcanic activity beneath Iceland’s surface. This stop offers a unique look at the geothermal energy that powers much of Iceland’s landscape.
At the end of the tour, we offer optional drop off point at the city center of Akureyri and then we return to the port.
