The Lake Mývatn area is by many considered the most beautiful place in Iceland. This has been one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations for years. An amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts and nature’s diversity. The lake area has been a filming location for major Hollywood films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Fast & Furious, and Star Wars.
We adjust the departure time and length so it will fit the docking time of each cruise ship at Akureyri Port. The return time is a minimum of 30 minutes before the ship’s departure.
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri Port. We drive east from Akureyri, cross Eyjafjörður fjord and enjoy the view of the town, the ocean, and the mountains surrounding the fjord.
After only a half-hour drive, we arrive at the picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. From there we go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga.
Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area is where the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. We enjoy the great panoramic view of the area.
Afterward, we arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava pillars and formations that are rich in mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, we drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and sulfur pits.
During the tour we stop for lunch at the Mývatn Nature and Heritage museum. A light lunch and ticket to the museum is included in the price of the tour. The museum is a small hidden gem in the Mývatn area, outside the reach of the big buses and crowds. The tour ends with a return to port in Akureyri, in time for your ship’s departure.
